The word “protein” is derived from the Greek word proteios, meaning “first.”
? All proteins in humans are large molecules made up from 20 different amino acids.
? Each kind of protein is composed of amino acids arranged in a specific order that
determines the characteristics of the protein and its biological action.
1) Proteins provide structure in membranes,
2) build cartilage and connective tissue,
3) transport oxygen in blood and muscle,
4) direct biological reactions as enzymes,
5) defend the body against infection,
6) control metabolic processes as hormones and
7) They can even be a source of energy.
