In chemistry, concentration is the abundance of a constituent divided by the total volume of a mixture. Several types of mathematical description can be distinguished: mass concentration, molar concentration, number concentration, and volume concentration. The term concentration can be applied to any kind of chemical mixture, but most frequently it refers to solutes and solvents in solutions. The molar (amount) concentration has variants such as normal concentration and osmotic concentration. Molarity : The equation for calculating Molarity from the moles and volume is very simple. Just divide moles of solute by volume of solution. Molarity (M) = moles of solute / volume of solution (in liters) A solution can be made less concentrated by dilution with solvent. If a solution is diluted from V1 to V2, the molarity of that solution changes according to the equation: M1 V1 = M2 V2 Moles of solute in original solution 1=Moles of solute in diluted solution 2 a solution is a homogeneous mixture composed of two or more substances. In such a mixture, a solute is a substance dissolved in another substance, known as a solvent. The solution more or less takes on the characteristics of the solvent including its phase, and the solvent is commonly the major fraction of the mixture. The concentration of a solute in a solution is a measure of how much of that solute is dissolved in the solvent, with regard to how much solvent is present.
