THYROID GLAND
HYPERTHYROIDISM
Lect. 2
CF of hyperthyroidism : Excitability , good appetite wei , weight loss , tremor , heat intolerance , loose motion and palpitation . O/E the patient is irritable , tachycardia , exophthalmos
Investigations
: Thyroid function tests T3 T4 TSH , Euthyroid , Hypothyroid , Hyperthyroid
Thyroid scan : Tc99 : Cold , worm or hot .
Treatment :
1 . Antithyroid drugs : Propylthiouracil and Neomarcazole
2 . Beta-blockers : Propranolol
3 . Radioactive Iodine
4 . Surgery : Subtotal thyroidectomy or now even total thyroidectomy
Complications of surgery
The complications include : Three Arteries , 3 Nerves & 3 Glands
1 . Haemorrhage
2 . RLN injury
4 . Horner’s syndrome :
3 . External laryngeal injury
7 . Hypoparathroidism
5 . Thyroid crisis
6 . Hypothyroidism
8 . Others such as infection , scar etc .
